Kapi Tjukurrpa at Mina Mina (Water Dreaming)
by John Tjapangati Lewis
John is a Warlpiri man from the Tanami Desert of Central Australia. John grew up in the settlement town of Yuendumu, where his father was a senior lawman, Paddy Lewis. He had a little formal schooling, but was instructed in the historic Dreaming of his people. The dreamtime theme, generally, is one of the inseparability of the self from the environment and usually includes travelling across the land. These notions are found in Tjapangati ‘s art, with its profusion of intersecting lines suggesting spiritual meaning and evocative depth.
